When working with a thermostat the cover can be snapped off to expose the wiring. Before doing any work on the thermostat and wiring take a picture off the wires and their connections, or write them down.

This way you can always refer back to the original setup. How Does a Thermostat Turn on a Furnace? A thermostat is a switch that can automatically turn on a furnace when a set temperature is reached. If a thermostat is thought to have a problem then it can be bypassed with a jumper wire. Thermostats use 24 volts AC from a transformer to control a furnace. The transformer steps down volts to the 24 volts the thermostat needs, and sends out the 24 volts on two wires.

Setting up thermostat harness and setting amana to remote

The two 24 volt wires go to the R terminal and C terminal inside the thermostat. Furnace 24 Volt Transformer R is the hot side while C is the common side of the transformer. Even though a red wire is supposed to go to R and a black wire to C the colors of the wires can sometimes differ. Many times installers follow their own color coding so always follow the terminals on the thermostat and not the wiring color. Both the furnace control board and the thermostat will usually have the same terminal letters.

The thermostat should automatically complete these connections when a set temperature is reached. Troubleshooting A Furnace Thermostat When the thermostat reaches a set temperature it connects R and W terminals to turn on the furnace. If a bad thermostat is suspected then these to terminals can be jumpered at the furnace to rule it out. If the furnace starts after jumpering R and W the thermostat is likely bad.

Keep in mind it could also be an open wire although this is not common it does happen. The wiring connections can go bad for any number of reason but eliminate the thermostat first by changing the battery and making sure it is on the right setting heat and temperature to activate the call-for-heat to the unit.

Then jumper the wires R and W at the thermostat terminals to rule out the wiring. Replace the thermostat as the last option after checking everything else. Thanks for this very thorough guide; I appreciate how you also included diagrams that are easy to understand. It has one 3 wire zone valve and one thermostat. Of course if in doubt be sure to call a professional. For example, if the Red wire is connected to W on the thermostat the furnace should turn on.

When the Red wire is disconnected from W the furnace should turn off. Other possible terminals often not used. Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published. Need to contact us? August in Controls. Still working on this PTAC in our addition: I'm trying to improve a marginal situation by operating an older PTAC with a remote thermostat rather than the unit's poor built-in controls.

Little direction is available from Amana Goodman or the manufacturers of the two thermostats I've tried. Previously I had connected an old Honeywell T87F round, mercury t-stat that I'd removed from another location.

Friedrich PTAC - R410A Service Manual

It worked in cooling mode but not heat; it could not energize the fan circuit in heating mode. Rather than rig up something with a relay I decided to just grab a cheap modern t-stat that should work with the PTAC. There is power to the t-stat, the fan will operate manually, but the PTAC does not respond to a call for heat or cooling.

The idiot light on the control board signals either OK or thermocouple error. I should note that I've tried this with J2 on the T-stat set to "electric" and "gas" but neither work.

Any thoughts on how to proceed? I called Amana, who sent me to Goodman, who left me on hold for 25 minutes.

Haven't tried Lux yet, based on m experience with Honeywell they'll just send me back to Goodman. August Tried it with that jumped and set to electric.

No dice. If you are not getting voltage then the thermosat is not working. Techman Member Posts: 2, Got it working, thanks!

Checked the fuse, jumpers, and all connections and finally got this working last night. While troubleshooting the setup I must have fixed a bad connection; when I reconnected it all after testing the t-stat it worked.

I think the problem was likely the silly design of the main board on the PTAC. Rather than a terminal strip it just has 14 pins coming off the board. There's a little plastic housing that slips over the pins, and you must insert jumper wires with spring clips into the slots for the appropriate connections. I removed and reinstalled those after checking the everything and it magically worked.

I appreciate the help with this.Quick Links. See also: Maintenance Manual. Table of Contents. Part No. As a professional installer you have an obligation to know the product better. This includes all safety precautions and related items.

No At the time of heating, the electric heater cooling or heating Outdoor temperature is too high Whether the cooling heating load is suitable The air tightness in room is not good.

A self-resetting overload is located inside the motor to protect against high temperature and high amperage conditions.

The limit is in series with the element and will interrupt the power at a designed temperature. The refrigeration system uses four basic principles laws in its operation they are as follows: 1. Voltmeter 2. Ammeter 3. The weighed in charge method is applicable to all units. It is the preferred method to use, as it is the most accurate. The weighed in method should always be used whenever a charge is removed from a unit such as for a leak repair, compressor replacement, or when there is no refrigerant Page Overcharged Refrigerant Systems After the unit has run 10 to 15 minutes, check the gauge pressures.

Gauges connected to system with an undercharge will have low head pressures and substantially low suction pressures. Overcharged Refrigerant Systems Compressor amps will be near normal or higher. Noncondensables can also cause these symptoms. Failure to follow these procedures could result in moderate or serious injury.

A wiring diagram is a straightforward visual representation in the physical connections and physical layout associated with an electrical system or circuit.

It shows the way the electrical wires are interconnected and can also show where fixtures and components could be coupled to the system. Wiring diagrams help technicians to see what sort of controls are wired to the system. Many people can understand and understand schematics referred to as label or line diagrams. This type of diagram is much like having a photograph with the parts and wires all connected up.

A wiring diagram is a straightforward visual representation in the physical connections and physical layout of the electrical system or circuit. It shows what sort of electrical wires are interconnected and will also show where fixtures and components could be attached to the system. Use wiring diagrams to help in building or manufacturing the circuit or digital camera.

They are also a good choice for making repairs. DIY enthusiasts use wiring diagrams but you are also common in home based building and auto repair. For example, a house builder may wish to what is physical location of electrical outlets and light fixtures employing a wiring diagram to avoid costly mistakes and building code violations.

A schematic shows the blueprint and function to have an electrical circuit, but is not worried about the physical layout of the wires. Wiring diagrams show what sort of wires are connected and where they should based in the actual device, plus the physical connections between every one of the components.

Unlike a pictorial diagram, a wiring diagram uses abstract or simplified shapes and lines to demonstrate components. Pictorial diagrams in many cases are photos with labels or highly-detailed drawings of the physical components.

If a line touching another line features a black dot, it implies the lines are connected. Most symbols used on a wiring diagram seem like abstract versions with the real objects they represent. A resistor will be represented which has a compilation of squiggles symbolizing the restriction of current flow.
